Octosmith is a tool for artists, and we're committed to treating you and your artwork with the respect it deserves. Here is exactly how AI does and does not fit into what we do.
Every file Octosmith outputs is made by fixed, deterministic algorithms. No AI generates, alters, or “cleans up” your work. Your upload is only ever touched by simple math.
Your uploads are not used to train any AI or machine-learning model, not fed into any generative system, and not shared or sold. We cannot do so even if we wanted to, because we do not store your files; your art is processed during the moment of export and deleted when your session ends.
Like most modern software, we build Octosmith with current developer tooling, which includes AI-assisted programming. That work happens only on our own code, in our own dev environment, and it never touches your artwork or the output files. This separation extends to assets used on the Octosmith site and social media; any artwork used is always created by dagneo and untouched by AI. Whatever tools we use, our team is responsible and accountable for the software we release, its operation, and support for the people who use it.
This project is not built by strangers. Octosmith started with dagneo, an illustrator who has vended in artist alley since 2015 and was tired of losing hours to file prep before every con. Rather than hand her art and her idea to a random developer, she built it with someone she trusts: her spouse, who has worked as a software developer for over 10 years, since before AI existed. It is a small, personal project made by two, real people.
Artists deserve tools that respect their work and are honest about how they are made. This is the standard we hold ourselves to, and will continue to do so, as Octosmith grows.
